Ingeniously staged and intelligently dialogued, it has no higher issue during the life style off its extremely unappealing title.” [ 8 ]

The latest film’s author and movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess video game, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the gambling enterprise and you may dated an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the brand new cast’s suavely managed body gestures regarding like and you can hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will stylishly assertive pictures (plus their political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a hidden vintage of genre.” [ ten ]

Its mostly a question of seeing Mr. Powell experience their paces smartly if you are a massive throw out of stars and you will actresses provide your traditional service. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable little lady just who brings out the best in your and you can Ellen Drew is the smooth and you will slinky vixen who gets your toward jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy once the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do yet another in a position journey as a tired police inspector which in the long run closes happening.
